Syria asks the EU for help after the strong earthquake

BRUSSELSFeb 8 – Syria asked the European Union for help two days after a powerful earthquake rocked the country and neighboring Turkey, the European Commission said on Wednesday.

“This morning we received a request for help from the Syrian government through the civil protection mechanism,” the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, told reporters.

He also stated that member states are being encouraged to contribute the requested aid.

A country can request help through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism when the magnitude of an emergency or disaster exceeds its response capabilities.

Once activated, the EU Emergency Response Coordination Center coordinates and finances the assistance provided by EU member states and eight other participating countries.
